Agriculture is the backbone of Indian economy. India ranks second worldwide in farm outputs and as per the Indian economic survey 2018, agriculture employed more than 50% of the Indian workforce and contributed 17-18% to the country’s GDP. India ranks first in the world with highest net cropped area followed by US and China. The economic contribution of agriculture to India’s GDP is steadily declining with the country’s broad-based economic growth. This is mainly due to late adopting of LEISA in lieu of HEIA that adopted during different revolution period from our original LEIA. Indian agricultural / horticultural and processed foods are exported to more than 120 countries. India exported $38 billion worth of agricultural products making it the seventh-largest agricultural exporter worldwide and the sixth largest net exported.
In India the population is around 1.39 billion and unfortunately India still stands 124th in the development index (poor Nutrition) and 126th in the list of 137 countries (World Happiness). The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and many scientists also indicated that because of soil degradation (unnecessary use of toxic chemicals) only 60 harvesting years are left. The Earth’s average land and ocean surface temperature in 2022 was 1.55 degrees F (0.860 C) above the 20th century average of 57.0 degrees F (13.90C) – the 6th highest among all years in the 1880-2022 (Record). India urgently needs to execute sustainable green agriculture using modern integrated technologies with fresh ideas in marketing and developing rural status.
In this context the Susrijo Institute of Agricultural Science, Technology & Management under University of Kalyani, West Bengal after emerging with Diploma in Agricultural Science and Management (DASM) and Post Graduate Diploma in Crop Production and Plant Health Management (PGDCPPHM) attempting to attract young generation in agriculture and allied sectors who thereafter, will work at rural sector for rural livelihood welfare completing the courses.
I feel proud to be associated with this organization where the Advisor, Director Consultants, Experienced Teachers & Staffs of this Institute are trying with their best to educate our bright talented budding agriculturists and prime them to serve our nation’s agricultural development.
